The engine flywheel is an inertial mechanical part fixed at the rear end of an internal combustion engine’s crankshaft. It stores rotational kinetic energy to offset the intermittent power output of piston engines, stabilizing rotational speed and smoothing torque fluctuations. Equipped with a ring gear, it cooperates with the starter to ignite the engine and transmits power to the clutch system.

- Constructed from high-grade cast iron or steel for strength and wear resistance
- Available in various sizes and tooth configurations to fit diverse engine models
- Precision-balanced to minimize vibration and ensure smooth operation
- Essential for starter motor engagement and maintaining consistent engine speed

Product Overview

The engine flywheel is an inertial component mounted on the rear end of an engine crankshaft. Relying on rotational inertia, it stores kinetic energy during the power stroke and releases energy in other strokes to stabilize engine speed and balance torque fluctuations. It also transfers power to the clutch and works with the starter ring gear to start the engine. High-quality flywheels are usually made of ductile iron and manufactured with precision CNC machining and ISO1940 G2.5 dynamic balance testing. Widely used in vehicles, construction machinery and generator sets, it guarantees smooth, reliable engine operation.

Introduction to the Forming Process of Engine Flywheel

Engine flywheels are mainly manufactured by casting. First, molten ductile iron is poured into pre-made moulds to form rough cast blanks. After cooling and demoulding, the rough castings go through sand cleaning and preliminary inspection to remove surface sand and obvious defects.

Then the blanks are sent for heat treatment to improve material rigidity, wear resistance and anti-fatigue performance. Next, CNC precision machining is carried out to process mounting holes, friction surfaces and gear ring fitting positions. After pressing the ring gear onto the flywheel body, each finished piece will undergo strict dynamic balance testing and dimensional inspection. Qualified products are cleaned and packaged for delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the function of an engine flywheel? A1: The flywheel is an inertial component mounted on the crankshaft. It stores rotational kinetic energy to stabilize engine speed, balance torque fluctuation, transmit power to the clutch and cooperate with the starter ring gear for engine startup.

Q2: What are the common faults of engine flywheels? A2: Typical failures include surface cracks, excessive unbalance, worn or broken ring gear, burned friction surface and deformation. These problems will cause engine vibration, abnormal noise, difficult starting and clutch slipping.

Q3: What causes early damage to the flywheel? A3: Improper installation, frequent violent starting, long-term overload operation, clutch failure and overheating are the main reasons. Poor dynamic balance during production will also accelerate fatigue damage.

Q4: When should the flywheel be replaced? A4: Replacement is required if the flywheel body has cracks, the ring gear is severely damaged, or dynamic balance cannot be recovered after repair. Minor scratches on the friction surface can be ground, provided the remaining thickness meets technical requirements.

Q5: Can we reuse the flywheel after engine overhaul? A5: It depends on inspection results. If no cracks, deformation or serious wear is found and dynamic balance test passes, it can be reused. Any cracked flywheel must be scrapped for safety.

Q6: What is your warranty policy? A6: We offer a limited warranty of 12 months or 100,000 km, whichever comes first. The warranty only covers manufacturing defects under normal operation. Damage from incorrect installation, overload and human error is not included.

Q7: Can you customize flywheels according to drawings or samples? A7: Yes. We accept customized production. Customers can provide samples, 2D/3D drawings or technical parameters such as rotational inertia and installation dimensions for trial production.
